KPA RESPONDS TO PRESS RELEASE FROM AMIGOEARUBA.COM

Effective January 1, 2025, the Aruba Police Department (KPA) will have a new approach and strategy in the area of communications. This means that the Corps will respond to reports that do not reflect the truth. KPA's response to media outlets that publish such articles is not intended to attack or create hostility. KPA's goal is dialogue and cooperation to provide society with accurate information.

The Aruba Police Department responds to the article published by AmigoeAruba.com on Monday, January 6, 2025.

We quote the article:
"Press as a Weapon, How Journalism Divides Society and Sows Instability."

Prior to the publication of this article, the Aruba Police Department was not contacted for questions or clarification. The article, published by AmigoeAruba.com, refers to a statement by Mr. Arnhem, Commissioner of Police, in which he condemns violence against members of the press, as well as violence against all other persons. However, the said article claims that the commissioner has received criticism and that his position is one-sided. The journalist in question focuses negatively in his articles and on social media on a daily basis. In this way, the journalist contributes to social division and harm to individuals.

Response from the Aruba Police Department

First, violence is a criminal act that is always condemned by the police. Combating violence is one of the core functions of the police.
The Corps understands that accusations against individuals on social media trigger unpleasant emotions.
However, it is not the job of the police to guide, educate or control the journalist in his daily work. This remains the responsibility of the journalist himself. AmigoeAruba's statement condones violence.

Imagine if the police allowed violence: "Then what kind of society would we live in?" The police are there to ensure public order and the safety of the community in Aruba.

Commissioner Arnhem calls for calm, order and respect for one another. Acts of violence are punishable by law at all times and can count on a firm police response.
