ORANJESTAD \u2014 Beeldend kunstenaar Alida Mart\u00ednez heeft het kunstwerk Coronando<\/em> geschonken aan Biblioteca Nacional Aruba. Het werk wordt opgenomen in de permanente collectie van de bibliotheek en is daarmee toegankelijk voor het publiek.<\/p>\n

Mart\u00ednez, voluit Alida Mart\u00ednez Soto (1964), is een hedendaags kunstenaar met een studio in Paradera. Zij staat bekend om haar mixed-media-installaties, sculpturen, collages, tekeningen en schilderijen. In de loop der jaren nam zij deel aan tal van exposities, waaronder tweemaal aan de Bi\u00ebnnale van Havana.<\/p>\n

In 2006 richtte Mart\u00ednez op Aruba de INSIGHT Foundation for the Arts op. Daarnaast was zij mede-initiatiefnemer en voorzitter van de Aruba Contemporary Caribbean Art Biennial 2011-2012. In haar werk onderzoekt zij onder meer identiteit, haar positie als vrouwelijke kunstenaar, cultuur en sociale vraagstukken binnen de Caribische context.<\/p>\n

Volgens de kunstenaar weerspiegelt Coronando<\/em> geopolitieke ontwikkelingen in het Caribisch gebied en daarbuiten. Met het werk stelt zij vragen over de richting waarin macht een volk, een eiland, de Caribische regio en landen wereldwijd leidt, en op welke manier die macht wordt ingezet voor het welzijn van de bevolking en de economie.<\/p>\n
