ORANJESTAD \u2014 Biblioteca Nacional Aruba (BNA) heeft de OCLC ACURIL Award voor \u2018Innovative Cooperation Initiatives in the Caribbean\u2019 ontvangen voor het project Coleccion Aruba<\/em>. De onderscheiding werd dinsdagmiddag op Cura\u00e7ao uitgereikt aan drs. Peter Scholing tijdens de ACURIL-conferentie, die deze week daar wordt gehouden.<\/p>\n

Volgens de organisatie is de prijs een erkenning voor de creatieve en vernieuwende manier waarop met het project samenwerking binnen de gemeenschap wordt bevorderd. Met dergelijke initiatieven worden volgens ACURIL belangrijke behoeften in het Caribisch gebied aangepakt, terwijl tegelijk een cultuur van samenwerking en effici\u00ebnt gebruik van middelen wordt gestimuleerd.<\/p>\n

BNA en Archivo Nacional Aruba (ANA) gelden als de twee belangrijkste publieke erfgoedinstellingen van Aruba. Beide organisaties werken al jarenlang samen aan het behoud en de toegankelijkheid van het documentair en audiovisueel erfgoed van het eiland. Door hun gezamenlijke inzet op het gebied van digitale transformatie, open toegang en publieksbereik hebben zij volgens de toelichting een voortrekkersrol vervuld binnen de voormalige Nederlandse Antillen en daarbuiten.<\/p>\n

Coleccion Aruba<\/em> is een nationaal digitaal erfgoedinitiatief dat in 2022 werd gelanceerd. Het platform is tot stand gekomen uit een samenwerking tussen BNA, ANA en de culturele stichting UNOCA. Het project brengt collecties van meerdere instellingen samen op \u00e9\u00e9n open digitaal platform.<\/p>\n

Het initiatief heeft als doel een inclusieve en meertalige digitale omgeving te bieden waarin de culturele, historische en academische collecties van Aruba worden ontsloten. Daarnaast is het gericht op het behoud van kwetsbaar materiaal door digitalisering, het waarborgen van langdurige toegang en het stimuleren van duurzame samenwerking tussen Arubaanse erfgoedinstellingen en organisaties in de regio en daarbuiten met Arubaanse of Caribische collecties.<\/p>\n

Volgens BNA onderscheidt Coleccion Aruba<\/em> zich onder meer door een samenwerkingsmodel waarin partnerinstellingen gelijkwaardig participeren, het gebruik van open-sourcetechnologie en internationale standaarden, en de ontwikkeling van een gedeeld metadata-kader. Het platform is tweetalig opgezet in het Papiaments en Engels en bevat daarnaast een vertaalmodule om de meertalige inhoud voor een breder publiek toegankelijk te maken. Ook worden onderzoekers, jongeren en andere leden van de gemeenschap betrokken bij de totstandkoming van digitale inhoud en tentoonstellingen.<\/p>\n

Inmiddels zijn meer dan 150.000 objecten digitaal beschikbaar gemaakt, waaronder kranten, foto\u2019s, video\u2019s, 3D-objecten, boeken, tijdschriften, scripties, kunstwerken, kaarten, mondelinge geschiedenis en manuscripten. In totaal gaat het om miljoenen pagina\u2019s aan digitaal geboren en gedigitaliseerd materiaal, dat volledig doorzoekbaar is gemaakt.<\/p>\n

Met het platform is de vindbaarheid en het gebruik van het nationale erfgoed volgens de initiatiefnemers sterk verbeterd, zowel voor onderzoekers en docenten als voor het brede publiek op Aruba en internationaal. Daarnaast heeft het project de samenwerking tussen instellingen versterkt, archiefpraktijken gemoderniseerd en bijgedragen aan een cultuur van openheid en innovatie.<\/p>\n

Coleccion Aruba<\/em> kreeg eerder ook al internationale erkenning, waaronder de 2024 Internet Archive Hero Award, de ACURILEANA Medal of Excellence en recentelijk een vermelding binnen UNESCO Memory of the World voor een deel van de slavernijgerelateerde collecties.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
