ORANJESTAD<\/strong> \u2014 De Directie Volksgezondheid Aruba (DVG) heeft maandag informatie verspreid over de signalen en symptomen van mazelen. Volgens de dienst verschijnen de eerste klachten doorgaans tussen zeven en veertien dagen nadat iemand in contact is gekomen met het virus.<\/p>\n

Mazelen tast in eerste instantie de luchtwegen aan en verspreidt zich daarna door het hele lichaam. De eerste symptomen houden meestal vier tot zeven dagen aan. Het gaat daarbij onder meer om een loopneus, koorts, hoest en rode, tranende ogen. Ook kunnen twee tot drie dagen na het begin van de klachten kleine witte vlekjes aan de binnenkant van de mond ontstaan, de zogenoemde Koplik-vlekjes.<\/p>\n

Drie tot vijf dagen nadat de eerste symptomen zijn begonnen, ontstaat een huiduitslag. Die begint meestal in het gezicht en de hals en breidt zich vervolgens uit over de rest van het lichaam. In de meeste gevallen blijft de uitslag ongeveer vijf tot zes dagen zichtbaar voordat die verdwijnt.<\/p>\n

DVG waarschuwt dat mazelen tot ernstige complicaties kan leiden. Genoemd worden onder meer longontsteking, meningitis, blindheid, oorinfecties en ernstige diarree met uitdroging. Volgens de dienst hangen de meeste sterfgevallen als gevolg van mazelen samen met dergelijke complicaties.<\/p>\n

Iedereen die niet is gevaccineerd, of wel is gevaccineerd maar geen immuniteit heeft opgebouwd, kan besmet raken. Niet-gevaccineerde kinderen, personen met een verzwakt of aangetast immuunsysteem en zwangere vrouwen lopen een groter risico op complicaties.<\/p>\n

Voor zwangere vrouwen kan een besmetting met mazelen tijdens de zwangerschap ernstige gevolgen hebben. Volgens DVG kan dit gevaarlijk zijn voor de moeder en leiden tot een vroeggeboorte. Daarom adviseert de dienst vrouwen die zwanger willen worden om zich v\u00f3\u00f3r de zwangerschap tegen mazelen te laten vaccineren. Tijdens de zwangerschap kan dit vaccin niet worden toegediend.<\/p>\n

DVG benadrukt dat bescherming tegen mazelen ook een persoonlijke verantwoordelijkheid is.
