ORANJESTAD \u2014 Joel Rajnherc, student aan de Universiteit van Aruba, heeft vrijdag 23 mei 2025 met succes zijn bachelorscriptie verdedigd binnen de afstudeerrichting Technologie en Engineering van het SISSTEM-programma. Zijn scriptie draagt de titel Speech-to-text model for keyword spotting applications in the Papiamento language within a healthcare environment<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Tijdens de verdediging presenteerde Rajnherc de resultaten van zijn onderzoek, waarvoor geluidsopnames werden gemaakt van 280 vrijwilligers op verschillende locaties, waaronder de Universiteit van Aruba en EPI. Die opnames werden gebruikt om een mathematisch model te trainen dat gesproken trefwoorden in het Papiaments kan herkennen.<\/p>\n

Voor het onderzoek werd gebruikgemaakt van deep learning en zogeheten Convolutional Neural Networks, een techniek binnen kunstmatige neurale netwerken die patronen in beeldrepresentaties van geluidsdata kan herkennen. Volgens de universiteit vormt het onderzoek een eerste stap in het opbouwen van eigen databestanden voor toekomstige toepassingen van kunstmatige intelligentie in het Papiaments.<\/p>\n

De universiteit ziet daarin mogelijkheden op het gebied van toegankelijkheid, inclusie en nieuwe manieren om in de eigen taal met technologie te communiceren. Dr. Salys Sultan, decaan van de Faculteit der Kunsten en Wetenschappen en mede-beoordelaar van de scriptie, noemt het onderzoek een begin van verdere ontwikkeling op dit terrein. Volgens hem zet de universiteit in op het versterken van de capaciteit op Aruba om technologische uitdagingen aan te pakken.<\/p>\n

Rajnherc richtte zijn onderzoek specifiek op de zorgsector. Daarbij werd gekeken naar de inzet van slimme luidsprekers in medische instellingen, zoals ImSan in San Nicolas. In samenwerking met Full Stack Vision Foundation werd het model bovendien aangepast om in realtime te functioneren op een energiezuinige Raspberry Pi 4-minicomputer.<\/p>\n

De scriptie stond onder begeleiding van MSc. Francis Lacl\u00e9. De beoordeling werd verder verzorgd door Dr. Salys Sultan en Dr. Eric Mijts. Daarnaast maakten twee externe deskundigen deel uit van de commissie: MSc. Peter Scholing, voor de digitalisering van het Papiaments, en BSc. John Becker, voor de mogelijke integratie van het systeem in een medische omgeving. Volgens Becker kan het gebruik van het Papiaments in deze technologie bijdragen aan duidelijkere communicatie met pati\u00ebnten.<\/p>\n

Met de succesvolle verdediging zet Rajnherc een belangrijke stap in zijn academische loopbaan.
