Zijn uitspraak volgde kort nadat de Verenigde Staten oorlogsschepen naar de Caribische Zee hadden gestuurd, een stap die volgens Caracas neerkomt op een bedreiging van de stabiliteit in de regio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maduro wees de Amerikaanse druk resoluut van de hand en benadrukte dat Venezuela beschermd wordt door \u201cde kracht van het volk, de instellingen en de geschiedenis\u201d. Hij riep de internationale gemeenschap op om zich te verzetten tegen wat hij omschreef als een \u201cillegale poging tot regime change\u201d vanuit Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De bijeenkomst, georganiseerd door de Venezolaanse wetgevende macht, bracht parlementari\u00ebrs, militairen en regeringsfunctionarissen samen die hun steun uitspraken aan Maduro en het belang van nationale eenheid benadrukten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volgens de president zal Venezuela zijn koers van onafhankelijkheid en soevereiniteit niet verlaten: <em>\u201cWe zijn een vrije natie en zullen ons verdedigen tegen elke inmenging, hoe groot de bedreiging ook is.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De spanningen tussen de VS en Venezuela zijn de afgelopen weken sterk toegenomen, nadat Washington nieuwe sancties aankondigde en militaire aanwezigheid in de regio opvoerde.
