Dit komt bovenop de al bestaande gele waarschuwing voor ruwe zee. Volgens de weerdienst wordt de situatie veroorzaakt door een uitgebreid hogedrukgebied boven de Noord-Atlantische Oceaan, dat zorgt voor weersomstandigheden met weinig kans op neerslag in de regio. Door deze droge en stabiele luchtstromen kan het Saharastof zich gemakkelijk verspreiden en langere tijd in de atmosfeer blijven hangen.
