Aanleiding is volgens de oppositie het uitblijven van concrete maatregelen om het model <em>High Value, Low Impact<\/em> daadwerkelijk uit te voeren.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens MEP was er na het economische herstel na de pandemie bewust voor gekozen om niet langer in te zetten op groei in aantallen toeristen, maar op toerisme dat meer economische waarde oplevert met minder druk op land en samenleving. Die beleidsrichting was mede ingegeven door zorgen in de gemeenschap over de gevolgen van toeristische groei voor de kwaliteit van leven.<\/p>\n<p>De partij stelt echter dat de huidige praktijk een ander beeld laat zien. MEP wijst op een toename van het aantal vluchten, uitbreiding van stoelcapaciteit en een groeiend aantal bezoekers, zonder dat er volgens de fractie duidelijke grenzen worden gesteld om de draagkracht van het eiland te beschermen.<\/p>\n<p>Daarmee neemt ook de druk op verkeer, woningmarkt, infrastructuur en milieu verder toe, aldus MEP. De fractie zegt dat inwoners zich in toenemende mate uitspreken over deze overlast en verwijt de regering AVP-Futuro onvoldoende aandacht te hebben voor die signalen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAruba kan niet onbeperkt blijven groeien. Wij zijn een eiland met grenzen. Als er nu niet wordt ingegrepen, zal de impact later moeilijker te beheersen zijn,\u201d stelt de fractie.<\/p>\n<p>MEP benadrukt dat de discussie over toerisme verder gaat dan alleen economische groei. Volgens de partij raakt het onderwerp rechtstreeks aan de kwaliteit van leven, de kosten van levensonderhoud, de beschikbaarheid van woningen voor jongeren, de bescherming van de natuur en de toekomst van Aruba in bredere zin.<\/p>\n<p>Met het gevraagde spoedoverleg wil de fractie duidelijkheid krijgen van de regering over onder meer de concrete uitvoering van het model <em>High Value, Low Impact<\/em>, de manier waarop de groei van het toerisme zal worden beheerst, de verhouding tussen uitbreiding van vliegverkeer en de doelstelling van minder impact, en de maatregelen die worden genomen om de kwaliteit van leven van de bevolking te beschermen.<\/p>\n<p>Fractieleider Evelyn Wever-Croes stelt dat Aruba een duidelijke keuze moet maken. \u201cNiet het aantal toeristen dat wij ontvangen bepaalt ons succes, maar de manier waarop wij het toerisme beheren ten voordele van ons volk.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>De fractie van MEP heeft een dringend verzoek ingediend voor een openbare vergadering met de minister van Toerisme.
