ORANJESTAD \u2014 De Caribische organisatie TRAMIL heeft onlangs de Papiamentstalige uitgave E guia pr\u00e1ktiko di TRAMIL di mata medisinal di Karibe pa kuido primario di sal\u00fa<\/em> gepubliceerd. Met het naslagwerk wil de organisatie wetenschappelijk onderbouwde kennis over medicinale planten beter toegankelijk maken voor de lokale gemeenschap.<\/p>\n

TRAMIL, voluit Traditional Medicine for the Islands<\/em>, is een regionaal netwerk dat sinds 1982 werkt aan de bevordering en documentatie van traditionele geneeskunde in het Caribisch gebied. De nieuwe gids beschrijft 38 plantensoorten, verdeeld over acht categorie\u00ebn van veelvoorkomende gezondheidsklachten. Het merendeel van de opgenomen planten is op de eilanden bekend en groeit zowel in de natuur als in de directe woonomgeving.<\/p>\n

De publicatie is een beknopte versie van de derde editie van de Farmacopea Vegetal Caribe\u00f1a<\/em>, waarin uitgebreidere informatie over Caribische medicinale planten is opgenomen. Per plantensoort vermeldt de gids de benaming in het Papiaments, welk deel van de plant wordt gebruikt en bij welke klachten toepassing mogelijk is. Ook zijn duidelijke aanwijzingen voor de bereiding opgenomen, ondersteund met schematische tekeningen. Daarnaast bevat het boek informatie over contra-indicaties, met het oog op veilig gebruik.<\/p>\n

Volgens TRAMIL maakt de organisatie gebruik van wetenschappelijke validatie om het gebruik van medicinale planten te onderbouwen en zo de eerstelijnszorg in het Caribisch gebied te versterken. Gegevens worden verzameld via enqu\u00eates in verschillende Caribische landen. Plantensoorten die door minstens 10 procent van de ondervraagden worden gebruikt, komen in aanmerking voor een validatietraject. Dat onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd door universiteiten en laboratoria in de regio en in Zuid-Amerika, volgens vastgestelde wetenschappelijke protocollen.<\/p>\n

De gids is behalve in het Papiaments ook in zes andere talen in de regio verschenen, waaronder hoofd-, creoolse en inheemse talen. De vertalingen zijn mogelijk gemaakt met financi\u00eble steun van de Europese Unie via het Parc Naturel R\u00e9gional de la Martinique.<\/p>\n

De lokale redactie van de Papiamentstalige editie was in handen van bioloog John de Freitas en Papiamentsexpert Noris Doran. Voor de bijdrage aan de drukkosten spreekt TRAMIL dank uit aan het Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied en de Landsloterij.<\/p>\n
