De bijeenkomst maakte deel uit van de activiteiten rond de herdenking van 40 jaar Status Aparte.<\/p>\n<p>Tijdens haar presentatie nam Maduro het publiek mee langs verschillende sleutelmomenten die de weg van Aruba naar een eigen status binnen het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden hebben bepaald. Volgens haar ligt de oorsprong van de afscheidingsbeweging van de Nederlandse Antillen in vroege verzoeken om meer autonomie, waaronder politieke en maatschappelijke acties in 1933 en de grote manifestatie van 1947, waarbij duizenden Arubanen hun wens tot afscheiding kenbaar maakten.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro stond ook stil bij de rol van Betico Croes, die in 1967 de politiek inging en in 1971 MEP oprichtte. Volgens haar werd de partij gevormd vanuit het streven naar een rechtvaardig, verenigd en trots Aruba, gebaseerd op sociale rechtvaardigheid, liefde voor het land, eenheid van het volk en autonomie.<\/p>\n<p>Onder de historische gebeurtenissen die tijdens de lezing aan bod kwamen, was de massale manifestatie van 18 maart 1973 in het Wilhelmina Stadion, waar duizenden Arubanen bijeenkwamen om hun wens voor een autonome status binnen het Koninkrijk uit te spreken.<\/p>\n<p>De strijd voor zelfbeschikking nam in de jaren zeventig verder toe. Maduro herinnerde aan de Marcha di Libertad, ook bekend als de Marcha di Flambeu, op 18 maart 1975. Die mars gold volgens haar als symbool van de vastberadenheid van het Arubaanse volk om politieke vrijheid te bereiken.<\/p>\n<p>Een belangrijk moment in het proces was het referendum van 25 maart 1977, waarbij 82 procent van de kiezers zich uitsprak voor afscheiding van de Nederlandse Antillen. Dat resultaat gaf Aruba volgens Maduro een krachtig democratisch mandaat om de onderhandelingen met Nederland over Status Aparte voort te zetten.<\/p>\n<p>Ook de periode van protest en sociale mobilisatie die bekendstaat als \u2018Augustus Scur\u2019 in 1977 kwam aan bod. Daarbij uitte de bevolking haar onvrede nadat MEP wel de Statenverkiezingen had gewonnen, maar geen regering kon vormen. De protesten en algemene staking uit die periode droegen er volgens de spreker toe bij dat Nederland de dialoog over de politieke toekomst van Aruba opende.<\/p>\n<p>Tijdens de lezing werd verder stilgestaan bij de nieuwe betekenis die Betico Croes gaf aan 18 maart. In 1976 werd die datum gekozen om historische leiders als Juancho Yrausquin, Henny Eman en Shon A. Eman te eren. In datzelfde jaar kreeg Aruba ook belangrijke nationale symbolen: het volkslied en de vlag, beide ingevoerd op 18 maart.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro besprak daarnaast het diplomatieke proces en de onderhandelingen die na 1977 volgden, met Arubaanse delegaties die deelnamen aan verschillende commissies en internationale conferenties. Dat traject mondde uit in de Ronde Tafel Conferentie van 12 maart 1983, waar Nederland het recht van Aruba op zelfbeschikking erkende. Uiteindelijk leidde dit tot de invoering van Status Aparte op 1 januari 1986.<\/p>\n<p>Na de presentatie volgde een gesprek met Nel Oduber, ereleider van MEP en voormalig premier van Aruba. In dat gesprek deelde Oduber persoonlijke herinneringen aan de politieke strijd voor Status Aparte en gaf hij nadere toelichting op beslissingen die in die periode werden genomen.<\/p>\n<p>Oduber legde daarbij een verband tussen de historische strijd voor autonomie en de huidige discussies over de Rijkswet Aruba financieel toezicht (HOFTA). Volgens hem zijn thema\u2019s als autonomie, bestuur en verantwoordelijkheid binnen het Koninkrijk nog altijd actueel voor Aruba.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens de ereleider is kennis van de geschiedenis van Status Aparte van groot belang om het huidige debat over de politieke en financi\u00eble toekomst van het land goed te kunnen begrijpen.<\/p>\n<p>De bijeenkomst werd afgesloten met een reflectie op het belang van nationale identiteit, eenheid van het volk en politieke inzet om de verworven autonomie van Aruba te beschermen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MEP-parlementari\u00ebr Xiomara Maduro heeft op het partijhoofdkwartier een lezing verzorgd over de historische weg van Aruba naar Status Aparte.
