ORANJESTAD<\/strong> \u2013 In aanloop naar het verwachte eindvonnis in de zaak-Avestruz in april, heeft MEP-parlementari\u00ebr Endy Croes opnieuw aandacht gevraagd voor de maatschappelijke gevolgen van de affaire. Volgens Croes gaat het niet om een afgesloten hoofdstuk uit het verleden, maar om schade die volgens hem vandaag nog door de bevolking wordt ervaren.<\/p>\n

Croes verwees daarbij naar offici\u00eble stukken uit het dossier en stelde dat de corruptie in de zaak-Avestruz ten koste is gegaan van publieke belangen. Volgens de parlementari\u00ebr werden commerci\u00eble terreinen destijds onder verantwoordelijkheid van voormalig minister Benny Sevinger aan een beperkte groep gegadigden toegewezen, waarna die belangen voor grote bedragen zouden zijn doorverkocht.<\/p>\n

De MEP-politicus stelt dat de gevolgen daarvan breder zijn dan alleen de rechtszaak zelf. Hij wees onder meer op de schaarste aan bouwgrond voor gezinnen, waardoor burgers volgens hem jarenlang op wachtlijsten staan voor een perceel om een huis te kunnen bouwen. Ook de gestegen kosten van levensonderhoud bracht hij in verband met het beleid rond grondtransacties en buitenlandse investeringen.<\/p>\n

Daarnaast voerde Croes aan dat overheidsgelden en publieke middelen volgens hem niet ten goede zijn gekomen aan voorzieningen waar de gemeenschap baat bij heeft, zoals infrastructuur, onderwijs en wijkcentra.<\/p>\n

In zijn verklaring verwees hij ook naar een passage uit het juridische dossier, waarin volgens hem staat vermeld dat Pristine Estates (Holiday Inn) een bedrag van 7.968,89 Amerikaanse dollar heeft betaald voor een vijftiende verjaardagsfeest van een kind van Sevinger. Croes presenteerde dit als voorbeeld van de vermeende verwevenheid tussen gunsten en besluitvorming.<\/p>\n

De parlementari\u00ebr kondigde aan in de komende periode verder in te gaan op onderdelen van het dossier. Daarbij herhaalde hij dat de bevolking volgens hem recht heeft op volledige duidelijkheid over de gang van zaken rond de zaak-Avestruz.
