ORANJESTAD<\/strong> \u2014 De opening van het Bureau Ombudsman op 1 december 2025 is volgens parlementari\u00ebr Evelyn Wever-Croes een historisch moment voor Aruba. In een verklaring feliciteert zij het land met de ingebruikname van het nieuwe instituut, dat burgers moet bijstaan bij klachten over onbehoorlijke behandeling.<\/p>\n

Wever-Croes stelt dat haar regering vanaf het begin prioriteit heeft gegeven aan de totstandkoming van de Ombudsman. Volgens haar was het traject niet eenvoudig, maar is het uiteindelijk gelukt om de nodige stappen te zetten. Daarbij wijst zij op de aanstelling van kwartiermaker Sahaira Kelly, die met de voorbereidende werkzaamheden begon.<\/p>\n

Ook werd een commissie Versterking Democratisch Bestel ingesteld om ondersteuning te bieden op juridisch gebied. Voormalig parlementsvoorzitter Edgard Vrolijk speelde volgens Wever-Croes een belangrijke rol bij het leiden van het wetsvoorstel dat de basis vormde voor de oprichting van de Ombudsman.<\/p>\n

Gedurende het proces heeft de regering volgens haar geprobeerd het instituut constitutioneel te verankeren. Dat voorstel haalde het echter niet, omdat voor een grondwetswijziging een tweederdemeerderheid nodig was. Wever-Croes verklaart dat de toenmalige oppositiepartijen AVP, MAS en Accion 21 daartegen waren en niet meewerkten aan de vereiste meerderheid van veertien stemmen.<\/p>\n

Volgens de parlementari\u00ebr betekende dat geen einde van het traject. De regering voerde daarop de laatste wettelijke aanpassingen door om de oprichting alsnog mogelijk te maken.<\/p>\n

De laatste fase betrof de selectie van een kandidaat voor de functie van Ombudsman. Op 1 oktober 2024 werd Jurima Bryson benoemd. Zij kreeg vervolgens de verantwoordelijkheid om het personeel voor het Bureau Ombudsman te selecteren.<\/p>\n

Wever-Croes zegt dat zij afgelopen vrijdag de kantoren heeft bezocht en kennis heeft gemaakt met het personeel. Zij spreekt van trots op het nieuwe Bureau Ombudsman en noemt het een belangrijke ondersteuning voor de gemeenschap.
