ORANJESTAD<\/strong> \u2013 Sidney Simoons heeft op 6 oktober 2025 met succes haar scriptie verdedigd en daarmee de titel Bachelor of Arts<\/em> behaald binnen de opleiding Organization, Governance and Management<\/em> (OGM) van de Faculteit der Kunsten en Wetenschappen van de University of Aruba.<\/p>\n

De scriptie, getiteld Beyond the Shoreline<\/em>, werd verdedigd voor een afstudeercommissie bestaande uit Tha\u00efs Franken MSc, drs. Yolanda Richardson en Ichmara Kock MA. Bij de verdediging waren ook OGM-programmamanager Ahmet Talan MSc, familieleden, docenten van de University of Aruba en medestudenten aanwezig.<\/p>\n

In haar onderzoek richtte Simoons zich op de sociale, economische en culturele betekenis van de ambachts- en kunstnijverheidssector op Aruba. De scriptie belicht de sociaal-economische en culturele impact van deze sector, met speciale aandacht voor de gevolgen van de COVID-19-pandemie voor de weerbaarheid ervan en het beleid dat nodig is om de sector verder te versterken.<\/p>\n

Voor het onderzoek werden onder meer gesprekken gevoerd met Cosecha, Departamento di Cultura Aruba en het ministerie van Cultuur. Daarnaast zijn ook perspectieven meegenomen van niet-gouvernementele organisaties zoals Go Cultura, vertegenwoordigers uit de kunstgemeenschap waaronder ARTISA en BAZART Creative Gallery, individuele kunstenaars en de Aruba Tourism Authority.<\/p>\n

Een van de belangrijkste aanbevelingen uit het onderzoek is dat de ambachtssector meer structurele ondersteuning en erkenning nodig heeft. In de scriptie wordt gepleit voor de ontwikkeling van een breed nationaal ambachtsbeleid, waarin de betekenis van de sector formeel wordt erkend en financiering en trainingsmogelijkheden worden gestimuleerd om ambachtslieden verder te ondersteunen.<\/p>\n

Ook wordt aanbevolen om ambacht en cultureel erfgoed sterker te integreren in het onderwijs en in culturele en educatieve instellingen. Volgens het onderzoek kan dit bijdragen aan het versterken van de culturele identiteit en aan grotere betrokkenheid van jongeren bij traditionele vaardigheden. Daarnaast worden ambachtslieden aangemoedigd om nauwer samen te werken en zich te organiseren in een vereniging, zodat middelen kunnen worden gedeeld, netwerken worden versterkt en een breder marktbereik mogelijk wordt.<\/p>\n

Simoons sprak in dit verband haar dank uit aan de docenten van de OGM-opleiding en aan de professionals die haar tijdens haar studie hebben begeleid. Ook bedankte zij de University of Aruba en de betrokken instanties die op verschillende manieren aan het onderzoek hebben bijgedragen.<\/p>\n
