ORANJESTAD \u2014 De Biblioteca Nacional Aruba nodigt het publiek uit voor de presentatie van twee klassieke filosofische werken die naar het Papiamento zijn vertaald. Het gaat om Republica<\/em> van Plato en E manual<\/em> van Epictetus, in een vertaling van Richard A. Frank.<\/p>\n

De presentatie vindt plaats op woensdag 22 oktober 2025 van 18.00 tot 20.00 uur in de Biblioteca Nacional Aruba. Volgens de organisatie gaat het om twee werken die, ondanks hun hoge ouderdom, nog altijd actueel en invloedrijk zijn.<\/p>\n

Plato<\/strong><\/p>\n

Republica<\/em> is een vrije vertaling van het bekende werk van de Griekse filosoof Plato. Het boek geldt als een van de belangrijkste teksten van Plato en als een invloedrijk werk binnen de westerse literatuur en filosofie.<\/p>\n

In het werk komen thema\u2019s aan bod als rechtvaardigheid, liefde, ouderdom, de onsterfelijkheid van de ziel, de rol van de filosoof, po\u00ebzie in de samenleving en het belang van goed onderwijs vanaf jonge leeftijd. Ook besteedt Plato aandacht aan de invloed van leiderschap en samenleving op de vorming van jongeren en aan de deugden wijsheid, moed, rechtvaardigheid en matigheid. Verder bevat het werk politieke, morele, sociale en menselijke beschouwingen, evenals de bekende allegorie van de grot.<\/p>\n

Epictetus<\/strong><\/p>\n

E manual<\/em> is een vrije vertaling van een werk van de Grieks-Romeinse sto\u00efcijnse filosoof Epictetus, die leefde tussen ongeveer 50 en 135 na Christus. Epictetus staat bekend om zijn nadruk op ethiek, zelfbeheersing, persoonlijke vrijheid en innerlijke integriteit.<\/p>\n

In zijn filosofie legt hij de nadruk op het onderscheiden van wat wel en niet binnen de eigen wil en invloedssfeer valt. Zijn denken heeft door de eeuwen heen grote invloed uitgeoefend, onder meer op de Romeinse keizer Marcus Aurelius, die in zijn Meditaties<\/em> blijk gaf van grote waardering voor Epictetus.<\/p>\n

Toegankelijk in de moedertaal<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vertaler Richard A. Frank zegt dat hem de afgelopen jaren meermaals is gevraagd waarom hij zoveel tijd en inspanning stak in het vertalen van deze werken naar het Papiamento. Volgens hem is de belangrijkste vraag juist waarom deze grote werken van de westerse literatuur in 2025 nog niet beschikbaar waren in het Papiamento.<\/p>\n

Frank stelt dat de teksten van Plato en Epictetus al in tientallen talen zijn verschenen, maar nog niet in het Papiamento zoals dat officieel op Aruba wordt gebruikt. Met zijn vertalingen wil hij aantonen dat het Papiamento rijk genoeg is om ook filosofische werken van deze omvang en diepgang te dragen.<\/p>\n

Volgens de vertaler maken deze uitgaven Republica<\/em> en E manual<\/em> toegankelijk voor iedereen van wie het Papiamento de moedertaal is.<\/p>\n
