Tijdens het tweedaagse evenement namen duurzaamheidsexperts en vertegenwoordigers van lokale organisaties deel aan werksessies over de toepassing van het MAB-programma op Aruba en de gezamenlijke ontwikkeling van een biosfeerreservaat op het eiland.<\/p>\n<p>Bij de opening van het programma waren gouverneur Alfonso Boekhoudt en premier Mike Eman aanwezig. De sessies stonden onder leiding van UNESCO NATCOM Aruba en het UNESCO-veldkantoor in Kingston. Daarbij werd gesproken over de uitdagingen en kansen die samenhangen met de totstandkoming van een biosfeerreservaat op Aruba.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens de organisatoren lag de nadruk op samenwerking en co-creatie. De deelnemers wisselden kennis uit over manieren om menselijk welzijn te verbinden aan ecologische weerbaarheid. Daarbij werd ook ingegaan op de vraag hoe een dergelijk project kan bijdragen aan inclusieve gemeenschapsontwikkeling en tegelijk de biodiversiteit van Aruba kan beschermen.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Falt, directeur van het UNESCO-veldkantoor voor het Caribisch gebied, stelt in een toelichting dat een biosfeerreservaat Aruba de kans biedt om een voorbeeld te worden van evenwicht tussen mens en natuur. Volgens hem kan het eiland daarmee een inspirerende rol vervullen in het Caribisch gebied en daarbuiten.<\/p>\n<p>Ook Iberostar benadrukt het belang van het initiatief. Jareth Vermeulen, Sustainability Alliances Manager op Aruba bij Iberostar Hotels &amp; Resorts, zegt dat de bijeenkomst in Aula di Lama aansluit bij de inzet van het bedrijf voor verantwoord toerisme. De locatie is volgens hem bedoeld om onderzoek, educatie en dialoog over Aruba\u2019s ecosystemen te bevorderen, met aandacht voor oplossingen die natuurbescherming en economische ontwikkeling met elkaar in balans brengen.<\/p>\n<p>Met de bijeenkomst onderstreept Iberostar naar eigen zeggen zijn langetermijnvisie op verantwoord toerisme.
